Todays mystery is tomorrows history: A Review of the Most Popular Diets

Everyone is always talking about the todays diet trends. What diets are popular, which ones they’ve tried, what others are doing, how someone else lost so much weight, what the new trends are blah blah blah, we love it.

DIET is our favorite “I’m on” phrase.

It’s not,
“I’m on” cloud 9
“I’m on” the high road
“I’m on” the fence
It’s always “I’m on this diet….”

Small talk has turned into what we are doing for exercise and nutrition, and what we think has worked for someone else MUST work for everyone. Which is not true. Not true at all.

But because there are so many questions coming out about what diets are successful and what they entail, I am going to review some of the latest, and most popular, ones for you. Now, this does not mean you should start following each of these for a week and test the waters. This means learning more true facts (and true opinions) about these diets and making a decision based on which one is going to be best for YOU. A diet is ONLY going to be successful in the long term if it is sustainable. So don’t pick something that you think you can follow and drop a significant amount of fat, because if it is happening quickly, it is less likely to have long term success. There are not types of diets out there that work fast, allow you to lose weight, and keep the weight off. You might be able to get 1 of those variables, but not all 3.

I am also not saying that you NEED to follow one of these, or any of these. If dieting doesn’t work for you (since it is mostly based on mindset) then start with simple lifestyle changes. Remember, we want successful and sustainable, not quick and easy. Not, lose 40 lbs in 2 months and then gain it all back when you return back to your original habits.

Dieting is tricky, and very hard to maintain if you are not in the mindset or have the personality type to go full force into for a period of time. Some people can go ALL in on a lifestyle change and be super successful, and sohealthy oils for weight lossme people need to dip their toes in first before really figuring out if it’s for them. Either way, dieting is harsh and not typically something people want to think about constantly. If you say “I am on a diet” rather than “I am making a lifestyle change”, then you’re not ready to dive in head first. But nonetheless, it is still beneficial to educate yourself about what is on the rise in the nutrition industry and what is fading out.

Ketogenic

Ketogenic diet is the most popular topic right now. Research has found a lot of health benefits of following this protocol (not just losing weight), which is why it has been all that and….a tablespoon of oil? I would say bag of chips…but those aren’t on the “acceptable” list of foods you can consume. The gist of the keto diet is high fat and very low carb. The only carbs you can eat are in the form of vegetables, but all the healthy fats are there for the taking! The ketogenic diet is based on the principal of your body producing an increased number of ketones, which are an energy source that is utilized when blood sugar, or glucose, levels are low. Without the presence of carbohydrates, the liver will produce more ketones as fuel to run on. The theory is that the high levels of fat in your diet will inadvertently turn your body into a fat burning machine. Once all the fat from your meal has been burned, it is easier to tap into the stored fat sources for energy (since sugar, or carbohydrates, are usually our preferred source). This could be a great option for someone who…

Paleo

The caveman diet, otherwise known as Paleo, follows the protocol of returning us to our genetic beginning. And i am talking true beginning, like back to our primal and early life ages. Basically the gist is that if the cavemen didn’t eat it, you shouldn’t either. Meaning if you can hunt, fish or gather it, then don’t put it in your mouth. Agriculture has evolved, much like we have, but not for the better. Our bodies are the same as they were back then, but the foods currently being mass produced are not easily utilized, or processed, by our bodies. The Paleo focuses on eating the right kinds of foods, not the portions or calories of the foods. The principal of “all calories are created equal” is NOT what this is fixated on.

Vegan

High Ho, High Ho….it’s vegan I’m going to go! Just kidding, but that is what a lot of people are saying these days. Vegan is definitely on the rise among the general population, but isn’t as big in the nutrition industry…yet. The Vegan diet is derived from the idea that animals are not food, plain and simple. ZERO animal products are consumed, this means no eggs, no cheese, no meat. And it usually goes beyond the food in the sense that no cosmetics, products or clothing come from harming animals, either. Animal cruelty is a lot more recognized by individuals, as well as the benefits of removing all toxins from products we consume (whether that is through our mouths, skin or breath). Vegans aren’t usually focused on weight loss or muscle gain, but rather the well being of animals and what can come from animal products, like hormones or parasites.

Whole30

Whole…what? Whole30? I only have to survive 30 days and then i have successfully completed the diet and can move on with my life? Not quite. Whole30 is a diet used as a reset and refocus approach. It is meant to allow your body to reset itself after a binge or holiday, and then continue forward with the habits of eliminating foods that do not work well for you and your body. Food groups that are eliminated include dairy, added sugar, grains, legumes, alcohol, MSG, Sulfites, and Carrageenan. This also means you cannot create or mimic any kind of baked good or junk food with Whole30 approved ingredients. The whole point of the diet is to rid you of the habit of reaching for those foods. It is also highly recommended that you do not take any measurements or step on the scale for the 30 days either. Some are very successful, and some do it for 30 days and then never look back.

Flexible

Tracking macros, or what most are calling “flexible dieting” is on the rise for a lot of people in the fitness industry. Whether it is competing in shows or competitions, or just online coaching, most people are taking the macro approach as it is easy to follow for some people and very easy to prescribe as coaches. I am NOT bashing anyone who does this method (I too have gone through a tracking phase) I am just stating that it is the easiest way to track progress via email and check-ins. The diet takes the approach of eating a specific amount of fats, carbohydrates and protein to fuel your body type and exercise. There are several different ways to calculate these numbers, and then they are typically adjusted every week, or every few weeks, until the goal is met. Then you tend to slow climb back up the ladder with “reverse dieting” in hopes of speeding up your metabolism. This can be a great approach for some, and a form bad habits for others.

todays diet trends are not restricting

Please remember when reading these follow up, in depth blogs about these diets that i am NOT trying to get you to get on a diet or tell you what i think is best. Everyone is different. Not everyone needs to diet and not everyone can diet. It is very individualized for each person, much like everything else that has to do with our bodies. So keep an open mind and think of this just as some insight into each diet. I am here to educate you on popular topics or things people want to learn more about!
