It’s no secret that personal development is important for living a fulfilling and successful life and even people who are worth billions find themselves reading and learning on a daily basis. But what exactly is personal development and why is it important to indulge in it? Well that is exactly what I am going to share with you today.
Personal development is an act of learning. Learning how you can live a better, more fulfilled life. If you find yourself running into walls in your daily life (figuratively, not literally) then personal development is a great way to knock those down! It can teach you about your problems; how to address them, how to solve them, how to work through them etc. This doesn’t mean there is anything wrong with you, or that you are alone in needing to do personal development, everyone should do it. Imagine going to medical school and graduating, and then NEVER opening a book again or reading research or learning about new techniques…at some point you would run into walls and barriers because THE WORLD IS ALWAYS CHANGING.
Personal development is a way to grow as an individual, and become a better version of yourself. Now, this is not changing who you are, this is just enhancing it. This is bringing out your best qualities, learning new ones and just investing in yourself to live your best life.
There are obvious benefits of personal development like contentment, happiness, and success. But there are other advantages as well, such as:
• Self-awareness: you learn to realize exactly who you are, what your values are and your purpose in life. These are all things that are going to really make you feel powerful in your pursuit.
• Greater Wealth: wealth doesn’t just mean money. Wealth is “an abundance of valuable possessions or supplies,” which means you can be wealthy in love, in meaning, in work. But personal development can also play a part in increase money wealth.
• Motivation: personal development can open your eyes to all things that are possible in your life. And with that you can light a new fire, a new drive to do the big things you were scared of or thought were out of reach.
• Sense of Direction: this is going to drive your daily activities. What you once spent hours doing might seem totally useless now. Personal development can shed new light on what is important and what is just “busy work”.
• Better Relationships: when you work on yourself, it wears off in all aspects of your life. So if you are working on bettering yourself and your views/values, it can only make the relationships you have with others stronger and more important. But it can also prove to you which relationships to nurture and which to let go of.
• Work-Life Balance: Oftentimes people get stuck in the “daily rut”. You start to get into a routine and then you never leave it. Soon, its been 10 years and you are exactly where you started. Personal development is going to weight heavy on work-life balance. Finding true happiness in your job, but also knowing when to step back and do the things you truly love. To live to work, and not work to live.
• More Resilient: Personal development isn’t going to stop bad things from happening to you, unfortunately, but it can teach you how to deal with them. It can teach you how to get through the tough times with a grateful heart and an open mind.
A lot of people look at personal development like a chore, or something we do it our spare time. It is like they make themselves think they HAVE to do it, and then they dread it and nothing ever sinks in. So here are a few tips to make personal development part of your life WITHOUT feeling like its forced:
→ Make it a life approach. Make it a habit to work on it everyday. And it doesn’t just have to be 10 minutes of reading a book or attending a seminar, it can be offering your talents and making a difference in someone else’s life.
→ Be the best person you can be. Offer encouragement and compliments to others. Be the sunlight for others, because that directly reflects back on you and your visibility.
→ Go above and beyond. Don’y just do the bare minimum, or what is asked of you; over deliver, always. This is going to let you perceive the personal development efforts you have put forward.
I personally love to indulge in self development written by others, whether that be books or podcasts. I wanted to share with you a few resources that I have have used/read that I found incredibly helpful!

I must admit, I used to think I didn’t need personal development. Or that it was stupid. Boy was I wrong. It has changed my life. The books I’ve read (with a long list of more to read) and the podcasts I listen to have been so inspiring. And it makes me excited to continue to learn more about myself and how i can grow as an individua
l. I strive to live my best life, and at times I fall short, but that doesn’t mean I am not constantly trying to apply new things to my life. To find my true calling and the values I feel so deeply about.
So if you are someone who thinks you don’t need personal development or that it’s not helpful, try it! And if you are someone who is always trying to better themselves and the people around you, keep going!
